Nearly 17,000 British and 5,000 Canadian soldiers
were laid to rest in Normandy. By virtue of an ancient custom of the British
Army, combatants must be interred where they fall. Hence the large number of
British cemeteries (18, including 2 Canadian ones) and their sometimes modest size.
Another originality is the presence of the graves of soldiers of other
nationalities, including Germans.
Most of the British
cemeteries share the same architectural features, with pergolas, flowerbeds at
the foot of the graves surmounted by white limestone headstones, a Cross of Sacrifice and – in the larger ones at least – a monument in the shape of an altar ‑ the
stone of remembrance.
